Kamloops City Councillor Arjun Singh acclaimed as new president of Union of B.C. Municipalities

THE Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) membership has selected its Table Officers for the 2018-2019 Executive Board at the close of its annual convention in Whistler.

Arjun Singh, Councillor with the City of Kamloops, was acclaimed UBCM President during Wednesday’s session and officially installed this morning after serving the past year as First Vice President.

Maja Tait, Mayor of the District of Sooke, was acclaimed First Vice President.

Sharon Gaetz, Mayor of the City of Chilliwack, was acclaimed Second Vice President.

Brian Frenkel, Councillor with the District of Vanderhoof, has been elected Third Vice President, after serving as a UBCM Director at Large for the past year.

“This year’s convention dealt with a number of key issues that will require ongoing and substantial collaboration with the province,” Singh said. “Dealing with matters such as how to share provincial tax revenues from cannabis, what to do about the impending loss of Greyhound bus service in all our communities, and the impact of proposed changes to the Fire Safety Act will require close collaboration between local government and the province. I look forward to working closely over the next year with the provincial government, which has indicated its willingness to cooperate with UBCM on these and other vital matters.”

Arjun Singh was born and raised in Kamloops. His parents, Dr Gur and Mrs Manju Singh, immigrated to Canada from India in the 1960s. He holds an MA in Professional Communication from Royal Roads University and a Certificate in Dialogue, Deliberation, and Public Engagement from Fielding Graduate University.
