Former Vancouver Park Commissionner Niki Sharma Receives Outpour of Support in Response to Racist Comment

nikisharmaNiki Sharma is a local Vancouverite that spoke out against being yet another to victim to the racism that still lives on today.

On March 24th Sharma received a racist comment in relation to her campaign for an opening on the Vancouver City Savings Credit Union (Vancity) board of directors, to which she had written a heartfelt response.

The comment was written on a Facebook page Sharma had made for the election, it read ““We don’t want packys in politics you people are taking over our country”. While the comment was ultimately deleted, Sharma was quick to capture it by taking a screen shot of it.

Here is her response to the ignorant comment:

Niki was overwhelmed with the love and support she had received once posting this. She has gotten over a hundred comments and shares, while many have written supportive messages towards Sharma on their own Facebook pages as well.

Sharma was the former park board commissioner, making history by being the first candidate with an Indian surname to have been elected to the Vancouver park board. She is also a trained lawyer, and was placed 17th out of 49 candidates for the 10 seat Vancouver city council.

While it is sad to see racism and ignorance still alive in todays day and age, the amount of love and support Sharma has received in response has restored some faith in humanity.
